The Arrival, Over, and Echo

 The Arrival

Soundtrack: Ambient, simplistic, realistic and emotive. Different sounds throughout the short            film affect how she thinks and reacts and causes the key changes in her thought process.

Plot = A mother to be is awaiting the father of her child and considering whether or not to abort the         baby. 3 act structure: setup, dissonance between aborting or not, vague and open ended ending             where we are left confused as to whether she will or won't do it.

Cinematography = Simplistic and fixed presentational style. Camera starts outside the door and only gets a clear shot when let in, we then slowly approach her - verisimilitude, as if we are coming over to sit and talk to her. Allows the focus to be on the soundtrack and narration and subtle facial expression changes. The lighting is key, showing the anxiety and difficulty she has in choosing what to do and represents the relative dread and hope she feels.

Over

Soundtrack = simplistic, ambient, and realistic soundscape

Plot = 3 act structure: flowers for the death creating confusion over who died + crime scene so you         wonder what happened + final act reveals unbelievable context of what happened. Suspense is                created through lack of chronology of events and creation of enigmas.

Cinematography = Simplistic, each scene it moves to a slightly different angle but maintains a                 fixed position and creates deep focus so you can unravel the enigmas and engage with the story as         well as democratise your view of the scene. Brief flashbacks and close ups to key props and items         that help the audience begin to unravel the mystery of what happened.

Echo

Soundtrack = Recurring motifs mirror the title and the theme of her repeating and reliving her                 trauma for personal gain as well as emphasising the undertone that this is more innocent and she             does this as a coping mechanism for her grief.

Performance = emotive and realistic performance with well written dialogue.

Plot = 3 act structure: seems innocent at first and real as she cries over the phone and gets help,             second act starts when she gets in the car and changes the route - spending the money on                         cigarettes instead, final act as we realise the truth behind her story.  Engaging as it takes till the             very end to truly understand her motives and how much of her extortion story is true.

Cinematography = Fast paced editing and whip pan shots at the most tense moments, when she is         not lying and is on the way home or at home with family there are steady and fixed shots to show             her calm and genius in contrast to the performance of her emotions earlier.
