Themes and Influences

Image
Themes:  - Broken Home / Divorce = Theme was inspired by oscar-winning films like 'A Marriage Story' and 'Revolutionary Road' Influences: - Cinematography = Influenced by the show 'Fleabag' for the emotional scene towards the end where Mike resolves that he is going to run away and starts packing his bags. The camera shifts from a fixed position to being hand-held, as if we are following him and a character in the sequence. This is similar to the end of S1 Fleabag when she is confronted with the truth by her sister and the audience learns it was Fleabag's fault that her best friend killed herself. -  Pacing = naturalistic and slow pace -  Performance and dialogue = as naturalistic as possible with wide inspiration coming from shows like 'Fleabag' and 'The Office UK', the dialogue goal was to meaningful through the mundanity rather than emotive over-dramatizations. Director of Office UK said he prioritized what isn't said over what is in ...

Target Audience

Age Rating: Based on the criteria (above) for the age ratings, I believe my short film fits into the 12 or 12A category. It does not feature any explicit profanity, nor any dangerous behaviour, there is implied violence but nothing overt, there is no nudity, no drugs are taken within the story, and there is no discrimination shown.  The themes of the short film I believe to be fit for all ages meaning that I would suggest it is a 12 rather than a 12A.

SHOT RECEE_1

Image
Opening and closing shot recee The majority of the shots in the film are being shot in my neighbour's house and the park outside our houses.  Since the park is made up of a lot of tight spaces we went on a recee to check that there was enough room for me to get the shots I had drawn up. Inspiration Shot: This was the first shot I drew up that inspired the whole plot of my screenplay. Once we checked this shot we realised it wouldn't work due to the architecture of the room, so we decided we would have to find a way to recreate the shot in the other location as it is pivotal for the aesthetic of my film (we had also just finished watching the newest episode of S7 Rick and Morty but that isn't a part of my story). Outdoors/establishing shots: This first shot was a part of the original shot concepts but I knew prior to this recee that it wouldn't be a part of the actual film because it didn't work (for the same reason the shot above doesn't work). However, followin...

The Arrival, Over, and Echo

Image
The Arrival  Soundtrack:  Ambient, simplistic, realistic and emotive. Different sounds throughout the short              film affect how she thinks and reacts and causes the key changes in her thought process.   Plot = A mother to be is awaiting the father of her child and considering whether or not to abort the           baby. 3 act structure: setup, dissonance between aborting or not, vague and open ended ending                where we are left confused as to whether she will or won't do it. Cinematography = Simplistic and fixed presentational style. Camera starts outside the door and only gets a clear shot when let in, we then slowly approach her - verisimilitude, as if we are coming over to sit and talk to her. Allows the focus to be on the soundtrack and narration and subtle facial expression changes. The lighting is key, showing the anxiety and di...

Tight Jeans

Image
TIGHT JEANS - short film Plot = 3 characters are waiting for their friend to drive them somewhere and we listen to them talk and argue whilst they do so.  Performance = Very simple, effective, and realistic dialogue and acting Mise-en-scene = Effective and simple mise-en-scene - the colours they wear match their ideology (the clever one in blue, idiot in red, orange is the middle ground). Cinematography = simple and maintains verisimilitude. Establishing shots of London. Stays fixed next to the main 3 characters or directly in front, only changing focus for short periods of time to other plot points - like the friend in the flat or the man wearing the tight jeans. Slowly pans around the 3 as they talk, helping the audience to feel the flow of the conversation. Use of deep focus

The FLY

Image
Soundtrack:  Made up of diegetic sound (e.g. the sound of the car, the fly, the bank robbery). The bank robbery noises are muffled which shows great attention to detail as the people are speaking through masks, and this emphasises our distance from the action as it is further muffled by the fact they are in an enclosed building when we are outside. The noises made by the fly are high pitched and annoying, this is so the audience shares in the character's constant rage towards the fly, justifying the absurd narrative. All the other noises that disturb him (e.g. the car horn going off) are equally high pitched, recurring, and bothering in order for us to share in his anxiety and heightened sense of alert.  Acting:  Acting is convincing as we can clearly see his building rage and intolerance - nervous tapping, the progressively angrier swatting, his micro-expressions change. Cinematography and Editing:  Impressive vfx used for the fly, CU of the fly to establish it as a...
